A BP gas station on Weaver Dairy Road is undergoing some major improvements.

The BP/Family Fare Service Station will add two additional pump stations and complete facade renovations and other site improvements. The Chapel Hill Town Council unanimously voted to approve the changes on Jan. 11 during its biweekly council business meetings.

“I voted yes because I feel that it’s a reasonable proposal,” said town council member Jessica Anderson. Anderson said she uses the gas station herself and thinks the changes will be beneficial for the business.

“Since it’s already an existing gas station, it will be more efficient, and more people can pump gas at the same time,” Anderson said.

Other council members felt the same way. Council member Michael Parker said that since the station is doing good business, adding in more pumps is a smart decision.

“I think (the proposal) makes perfect sense,” Parker said. He also said the renovations will be a win-win situation for both the business and the community.

Kay Pearlstein, senior planner for the town of Chapel Hill, said the changes would include adding in a bicycle repair station to better serve the needs of their customers. The changes will also include creating a formal outdoor eating area with shade.

Though the project is not yet underway, businesses usually have up to two years to do the construction after being approved for a special use permit.

Pearlstein said taking out the old underground storage tanks will take some time as excavation will have to be done. However, the project timeline has yet to be set.

Even still, the renovations will help the BP station be more efficient in serving customers in the area.

“I think people are looking forward to having the improvements made and cyclists will be seeing this as a hub,” Pearlstein said.
