Letter: We must keep an eye on our government

TO THE EDITOR:

“Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty.”

Extracted from the full quote by John Philpot Curran, “The condition upon which God hath given liberty to man is eternal vigilance; which condition if he break, servitude is at once the consequence of his crime and the punishment of his guilt.”

As Americans our duty is to stay vigilant. The concept of corporate personhood threatens our democracy. The 2010 Citizens United decision infused corporations and other artificial entities with constitutional rights and further eroded the distinction between free speech and big money.

Our civic duty begs the question: should an inanimate piece of legal fiction be granted the same status of ‘personhood’ as a living, breathing mortal human being?

If you say no, join the thousands of voices who want to Make America Moral Again. Go to www.NCWeThePeople.org. Sign the petition for a ballot measure that allows you, the public, to speak out in support of a new constitutional amendment that says unlimited money is NOT free speech and human beings — NOT artificial entities — are “natural persons” entitled to constitutional rights.
