Poetic justice: An ode to Carolina basketball

North Carolina guards Nate Britt (0) and Joel Berry (2) share a moment of embrace in between plays against Oregon in their Final Four matchup on Saturday in Phoenix.

While April may kick off National Poetry Month, we students at UNC have had another pretty important national event to worry about.

But, because Swerve is such a professional and versatile media outlet, we’ve decided to combine two of the greatest forms of art known to man — poetry and Carolina basketball.

What better way to pay tribute to the elegant grace that is Kennedy Meeks going hard in the paint than with an ancient Japanese haiku?

That is why Swerve, in association with Zach Goins Productions, is proud to present: The Ballads of Carolina Basketball.

Questions

Ceiling is the roof,

But where does the attic go?

Only the goat knows

Maye Madness

We were tied with Kentucky, it was down to wire,

The Heels needed a hero to help us soar higher,

Berry? Jackson? Pinson or Meeks?

We needed a bucket to extend the win streaks,

Britt? Hicks? Maybe even Bradley?

We needed a shot, and we needed it badly,

The calendar read March, but we knew it was Maye,

History was written, that fateful spring day,

This team keeps on winning, it isn't done yet,

The hero that we, never knew that we needed,

Made sure that the Heels would not be defeated.

Justice

Redemption

The shot that gave us hope, but soon to be forgot,

Jumping and screaming so loud, but it was all for naught,

But now we’re back again, ready to set the record straight,

Destined for redemption, we must fulfill our fate,

No more talk of Nova, the focus is on Gonzaga,

Six titles down already, time for the next step in our saga,

The natty will soon be ours, another ‘ship for the blue and white,

The streets of Franklin will soon, be bathed in bonfire light,

No crying Jordan tonight, smiles all around,

Celebrations world wide, as Tar Heels hark the sound,

Redemption from years past, it all has come to be,

Time to hang another banner, for good ol’ U-N-C.
