Letter: Parkland students will never give up

TO THE EDITOR:

Marcus McFaul, minister of Binkley Church, wrote:

"And high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors shall lead them..."

I'm sure that like me you've been inspired and encouraged by the voices and determined actions of high school students all across the country in the wake of the tragedy at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.

I have been particularly moved by the passionate eloquence of grief-numbed students from Stoneman Douglas themselves who've endured the murder of 17 classmates, yet seek change around issues of gun violence in our schools.

Emma Gonzalez (Senior):"Politicians funded by the NRA, telling us nothing could have been done to prevent this, we call BS."

Delaney Tarr (Senior): “We’re not afraid of losing. The only thing we have to gain at this point is our safety."

Alfonso Calderon (Junior): “I know everyone will fight to see sensible gun laws in this country, so that kids don’t have to fear going back to school.”

May God bless their voices as they courageously confront these real life and death situations. May those in power listen to the perspectives these incredible youth, our incredible youth, are sharing with all of us.

Marjory Stoneman Douglas lobbied for women’s suffrage and campaigned for civil rights and the Equal Rights Amendment.

"Be depressed, discouraged, and disappointed at failure and the disheartening effects of ignorance, greed, corruption and bad politics," she’s quoted as once saying, “but never give up."

May we all be students of that school of thought.
