The City of Durham issued a press release early Thursday morning which stated that the shooting was fatal.

According to the release, the Orange County Sheriff's Department received a report that an armed suicidal man was driving in the area of the New Hope Commons shopping center. The release said officers searched for the man in the area for about 90 minutes, and encountered him in the parking lot at approximately 8:15 p.m.

The officers approached the man and tried to speak with him, but said he then displayed a handgun and pointed it at the officers causing them to fire their weapons, according to the release.

Durham Police Department officers arrived and began performing CPR on the man. The release said he was transported to a local hospital, where he died soon after.

The incident is currently being investigated by the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigations and the Durham Police Department Professional Standards Division, the release said. The man has not yet been identified.
