The UNC J.V. basketball team bounced back from a season-opening loss over the weekend with a comfortable 80-64 win over the Eagles of Wake Tech on Tuesday night at the Dean Smith Center.
What happened?
UNC got off to a hot start as Brooks Palmer drained a 3-pointer on the team’s first possession of the game. Robbie O’Han followed it up with a nice contested lay-up before Pearce Landry drained a three of his own, and the Tar Heels proceeded to build a quick 18-12 lead.
Wake Tech hung in the game, however, closing the gap to two points midway through the first half. After several possessions of trading baskets, another Landry three helped extend the lead back to nine for the home team.
That lead would only grow in the final minutes of the half, with Thomas Bledsoe draining a three followed by another from O’Han to make it a 17-point game at the break.
The second half started much like the first, with another pair of threes from Palmer and Landry giving the Tar Heels plenty of breathing room. Landry stayed hot throughout the second half, adding two more threes on back-to-back possessions several minutes later to extend the margin to 20 points.
The Eagles managed to whittle the lead down to 12 in the final 10 minutes, but the result never felt in doubt coming down the stretch as UNC cruised to an 80-64 victory.
Who stood out?
Landry ended the game as the leading scorer for both teams with 21 points, followed closely by JJ Robertson with 20 for Wake Tech.
