It was a busy weekend for North Carolina athletics as nine different teams competed. The No. 13 UNC men’s basketball team led the way with an 85-76 road win at Miami on Saturday afternoon.

Men’s basketball

An inconsistent first half saw the Tar Heels and Hurricanes tied at 37 at the intermission. UNC shot 50 percent (15-30) from the field, but allowed Miami to hit seven first-half 3-pointers.

Early in the second half, the Tar Heels held a one-point lead before a 7-0 run gave UNC some breathing room, courtesy of a Coby White jumper, a Cameron Johnson and-one layup and a Nassir Little jump shot.

Twenty-three combined second-half points from Johnson, a graduate guard, and senior guard Kenny Williams helped the Tar Heels move to 14-4 and 4-1 in ACC play. Here are three takeaways from the win.

Fencing

Both the Tar Heel men and women emerged undefeated at the Philadelphia Invitational on Saturday. The UNC women's team began the day with a 19-8 win over Sacred Heart. The North Carolina women defeated NYU, 21-6, and beat Haverford, 22-5. UNC closed out the day with a 21-6 win over Brown.

The UNC men swept the competition, beginning with a 21-6 win over Sacred Heart. UNC defeated a tough NYU team, 14-13, beat Haverford, 18-9, and topped Brown, 21-6.

Women's basketball

The women's basketball team also competed against the Hurricanes this weekend but did not have the same result as the men. The Tar Heel women fell, 76-68, due to a first-quarter showing that saw Miami up by 19 points by the end of the frame.

Redshirt junior guard Stephanie Watts led the way with 22 points and 14 rebounds on the afternoon.

Gymnastics

Fresh off an undefeated weekend at the Lindsey Ferris Invitational, UNC competed against Ball State and Oklahoma on Saturday. Facing the No. 1 Sooners was a tall task as the Tar Heels fell, 197.000-195.150. However, UNC did outlast Ball State, 197.000-193.600, while improving on its overall score from last weekend by almost one full point.

Women's tennis

Two Tar Heel women's tennis players competed in the 2019 Freeman Memorial Championship this past weekend. Senior Chloe Ouellet-Pizer lost in the first round of the main draws singles, 6-3, 6-0.

Senior Jessie Aney won her first match in three sets on Friday, then defeated Jada Hart from UCLA, 6-4, 6-3 in the round of 16. Aney fell in the quarterfinals in three sets, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4.

The two players fell in their first doubles match on Friday, but won in a consolation doubles match on Saturday, 6-4.

Track and field

The UNC track and field team competed in its second event of the new year at the Gamecock Inaugural this past weekend. Junior Daniel McArthur led the way with a throw of 64-feet and 10.5 inches in the shot put event to break the North Carolina program record.

Redshirt junior Draven Crist earned first-places honors for the second consecutive week with a high jump of 6-feet, 11.75 inches.

For the women's team, graduate student Alex Cooke won the weight throw invite with a mark of 63-feet and 9.5 inches.

However, the Tar Heels were grounded this weekend. The men's team fell, 193-101, and the women were defeated, 197-97.

Men's lacrosse

UNC engages in its final scrimmage on Saturday against Loyola University Maryland in Chapel Hill at noon.
