Second downtown Chapel Hill dedication plaque recovered

dedication plaque Franklin

Demonstrators erect a dedication plaque on Tuesday, Feb. 12., 2019 on Franklin St. near McCorkle Place. The memorial is dedicated to the "Negro Wench" Julian Carr stated he beat in his 1913 dedication speech to Silent Sam near the location of the statue.

The plaque honoring the woman Julian Carr described whipping in his speech at Silent Sam's dedication has been recovered, according to a press release from the Town of Chapel Hill.

The plaque was put at the intersection of East Franklin Street and Henderson Street on Feb. 12 and reportedly removed on Friday.

Orange County Communications was alerted on Friday about someone loading the plaque into a pickup truck and driving away. The vehicle was then stopped by an Orange County deputy, and the plaque was given to the Chapel Hill Police Department.

The Chapel Hill Police Department will return the plaque to the artist as soon as contact is made.
