Following a search led by a senior associate dean in the College of Arts and Sciences, the University announced Tuesday that they have selected a vice provost for global affairs and chief global officer, Barbara Stephenson.
Stephenson was appointed as the Ambassador to Panama by President Obama, and has over 30 years of foreign service experience.
UNC Global works to elevate the University’s standing and presence around the globe, and needs a leader who can nurture a “pan-university global strategy that will enhance UNC-Chapel Hill’s international reach and increase Carolina’s global impact and reputation,” according to the description in the online job search.
Stephenson, coming off a career spent in international relations, is now responsible for representing UNC on the global stage, and will work with donors, trustees and faculty in the pursuit of extending UNC’s operations overseas.
"As a leading global public research university, this position is critically important in expanding our international relationships. Ambassador Stephenson is up to the task of establishing strategic research and academic partners to better prepare our graduates for the ever-changing global economy. We look forward to her arrival," said interim Chancellor Guskiewicz in a statement.
