UNC sophomore Jennifer Zhou takes a practice swing at the Ruth's Chris Tar Heel Invitational on Sunday, Oct. 13, 2019. UNC placed sixth out of 18 teams at the three day tournament. Zhou finished 5th place overall, her second best in her collegiate career.

Sophomores Jennifer Zhou and Nicole Lu turned in totals of 1-over 217 and 3-over 219, respectively, to carry the North Carolina women's golf team to a 12th-place finish in the Landfall Tradition tournament from Oct. 25-27 in Wilmington, North Carolina.

What happened?

UNC remained consistent through the three days of the tournament, posting three consecutive rounds with scores of 8-over 296.

Zhou was the standout of the tournament for the Tar Heels with a pair of 1-over-par 73 outings in the first two days of the competition before shooting a 1-under-par 71 on the final day to boost herself into a tie for 13th in the final results.

Zhou notched four birdies in the first round, three in the second and four in the final round, tied for third-most birdies in the field of competition.

After Zhou, Lu was the most impressive North Carolina player on the course. The sophomore tied for 26th overall in the tournament behind her nine birdies in the three rounds. Lu was no exception to the team's consistency, posting a 1-over-par 73 in each of the tournament's three rounds.

Rounding out the UNC team was first-years Kayla Smith and Krista Junkkari, senior Mariana Ocano and junior Ava Bergner. Smith shot a 3-over-par 75 in all three rounds, while Junkkari scored rounds of 75-75-77 to finish with an 11-over-par. Ocano tied for 73rd place after turning in a 15-over-par performance. Bergner scored rounds of 84-77-80 to tie for 93rd overall in the tournament.

Who stood out?

This result was a massive improvement for Zhou from her outing in last year's Landfall Tradition where she shot a 15-over-par as a first-year.

Lu turned in an impressive scorecard as well, highlighted by her 2.88 scoring average in the second round. Like Zhou, she her score in this year's Landfall Tradition was leaps and bounds ahead of her 25-over-par result from last fall.

When was it decided?

Three back-to-back-to-back scores of 296 from the North Carolina women's golf team solidified the team's spot in the standings early. At the end of each day of the competition, the Tar Heels finished each round either in 11th place, 12th place or tied for 11th place.

For the top golfers on the team, the consistency led to solid outings. However, the price to pay for those noteworthy individual scores was that the less impressive scores from the team kept the team from gaining any traction in the standings.

Why does it matter?

UNC's 12th-place finish was the team's lowest result of the 2019 fall season. Despite the overall consistency of the team throughout the weekend and the strong performances of Zhou and Lu, North Carolina will certainly try to spend the offseason correcting the mistakes from this tournament.

When do they play next?

The Landfall Tradition concluded the Tar Heels' fall season, but the team will pick back up for the spring season on Feb. 17-18 with the Moon Golf Invitational in Melbourne, Florida.
