Southpoint mall evacuated after incident involving firearm, Durham PD investigating

UPDATE 10/25/2021, 6:10 p.m.:

Durham police have said that the loud bang heard at the Streets at Southpoint on Sunday was the result of a broomstick striking the top of a table, which resulted in a loud bang.

At about 3:09 p.m. yesterday, officers responded to a "sounds of shots" call at the shopping mall. A large fight occurred by the Food Court in which a gun was displayed, but not fired according to a press release from the Durham Police Department. 

After the loud bang, people began to flee the area causing chairs and tables to get overturned, Durham police said. 

There were four reported, non-life threatening injuries from the incident.

The case is still under investigation, according to the release.

The Streets at Southpoint, a shopping mall in Durham, was evacuated Sunday after an incident involving a firearm, according to a 3:56 p.m. notification from AlertDurham, the county's emergency alert system.

The county reported there were no victims, but patrons were asked to avoid the area until further notice.

The Durham Police Department said in a tweet that officers were investigating a report of shots being fired at the mall, but that a preliminary investigation revealed that there were no shots fired at the scene.

There were a few minor injuries reported, police said.

The department has asked people to continue to avoid the area until further notice as it continue its investigation.
