UNC first-year Fiona Crawley returns a volley during a singles' match on March 28, 2021 at Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. The Tar Heels defeated the Fighting Irish 7-0.

The No. 3 North Carolina women’s tennis team (2-0, 0-0 ACC) opened its match-play season in dominating fashion with doubleheader wins against Elon (0-1) and Appalachian State (0-1).

What happened?

The Tar Heels opened their doubleheader against Elon, starting their top three doubles pairs, including the nationwide No. 1 pair in Elizabeth Scotty and Fiona Crawley, the No. 6 pair Cameron Morra and Carson Tanguilig and the No. 34 pair Alle Sanford and Reilly Tran. Each of the three doubles teams won handedly, giving up a combined two games to the Phoenix to give the Tar Heels a point for the doubles wins.

The individual matches featured three Tar Heels ranked in the top 20 nationally, including No. 7 Tran, No. 13 Tanguilig and No. 19 Crawley. Each of the Tar Heel players won in straight sets, giving North Carolina its first overall meet win with a 7-0 sweep over Elon.

The next match featured a similar pace for the Tar Heels. With only five players available for App State, North Carolina was able to capitalize on the short-handed deficits from the Mountaineers. With only two doubles teams able to play for App State, the Tar Heel team was able to quickly overtake the Mountaineers with their pairs of Morra and Tanguilig as well as Sanford and Tran, giving North Carolina a 1-0 lead in its second match.

In the singles matches, the Tar Heels were able to continue their domination and post similar numbers to their matches against Elon just hours before. Led with three 6-0, 6-0 victories, the Tar Heels were able to sweep yet another team 7-0 to win their second match of the season to finish the day unblemished.

Who stood out?

All the players who touched the court today are worth mentioning, not dropping a single match to either opponent. But of the players for the Tar Heels, Crawley and Tran each held all of their opponents to two and six games total, respectively.

When was it decided?

While the doubles matches are only worth one point total in the overall score, the Tar Heels were able to set a tone in those matches that carried throughout the day. Once North Carolina was able to sweep the doubles points in both of the matches, the team would not be stopped during the singles games.

Why does it matter?

While the wins were over unranked teams, beating both Elon and App State allows the Tar Heels to build some momentum going into their future matches and help cement their No. 3 ranking going into the spring season.

When do they play next?

North Carolina will continue its match play with a doubleheader in Chapel Hill on Tuesday against East Carolina and Campbell. The first match against the Pirates will start at 2:00 p.m and the following match against the Camels will start at 6:00 p.m.
