Sophomore neuroscience major Ritushree Dutta smiles for a portrait outside of the Genome Sciences Building on Jan. 10, 2022. Her goals for the semester are to do well academically and socially.

As UNC returns for the first semester of classes in the new year, staff writer Alan Hunt asked students: "What are your goals for 2022?"

Ritushree (Ritu) Dutta, sophomore neuroscience and medical anthropology major

“Obviously in addition to performing well in classes and getting to know people on campus, one of my biggest goals this semester especially is to try and be an example of how you can stay safe during the pandemic and live as much of a normal life as possible.”

Celeste Whiteaker, senior management and society major

“My goal for 2022 is to learn more about the Carrboro and Chapel Hill community and kind of engage with it. I wanna do more volunteering this semester because I got to learn the ins and outs of just kind of the layout of Chapel Hill and that was really cool.”

Linh Do, sophomore statistics and analytics and psychology major

“My goal is a lot more personal, it’s just to be more open minded to change. If we learned anything from COVID-19, it's that things always change and nothing ever really goes to plan exactly the way we want. But seeing how that can really benefit me, and not being close minded and stubborn (as) not wanting to change can be damaging.”

Chandler Haneke, senior global studies major

“My goal would be to not get three D’s again, and also to be more involved at UNC in general. And then maybe not wear sweatpants every day as well.”

Jake Wiener, first-year Asian studies major

“My biggest goal is to keep up with hobbies and things I like even though I’m busy. This is definitely the busiest I’ve ever been with college, plus work, plus I’m also in marching band. Last semester, I didn’t do any of the things I used to do in high school for fun, so I wanna make sure to find time to do that again.”

Ben Frens, sophomore music and biology major

“My goals are just to be involved on campus and meet new people and really just make the most of the college experience even with COVID and all that, just staying positive.”
