St. Petersburg Philharmonic finally arrives at Memorial Hall

The melodies of the St Petersburg Philharmonic are coming to Chapel Hill.

The Philharmonic was founded in 1882 and proudly claims to be the oldest Russian orchestra. For the second time this orchestra will be coming to perform at the University of Chapel Hill in partnership with the Carolina Performing arts program. The orchestra is made up of about 100 musicians and is based in St. Petersburg, Russia.

Student tickets are currently sold out, said Sean McKeithan, marketing and communications coordinator.

“The show has been nearly sold out since we put it on sale,” he said.

The logistics of bringing such a renowned group to campus can be challenging, McKeithan said.

“A big orchestra like this creates a lot of challenges as far as logistics, but the sound presented is stunning and worthwhile,” he said.

Rebecca Brenner, marketing and promotions assistant for Carolina Performing Arts, said the process involves two management circles coming together behind the scenes of the production.

“Our production staff work closely with the orchestra management team to confirm backstage setup to ensure that everything goes as smoothly as possible backstage during the performance,” Brenner said.

Yuri Temirkanov is the artistic director of the St. Petersburg Philharmonic orchestra. He will be directing the performances.

“An orchestra’s performance is an overwhelming experience of physical impact and an emotional trip that can only be experienced in person,” said Tonu Kalam, director of the UNC symphony orchestra.

“The conductor’s challenge is to motivate people just like an athletic coach: to be together, play together and interpret together.”

The St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra will play Memorial Hall Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. Some tickets are still available for purchase and run from $75 to $150.
