"Parenthood" returns for a fresh start

The Bravermans are back, and they’re as sweet, funny and inspiring as ever.

“Parenthood” returned a couple weeks ago for its fifth season with all the laughter and tears we’ve come to expect. The episode felt like the beginning of new things. Last season’s storylines were mostly wrapped up, so we’re working with all new material here.

Crosby and Jasmine’s storyline is arguably the strongest. They’re adjusting to life with a newborn and they’re not doing too well. They bicker constantly and Crosby seems on the verge of a breakdown, but at the end of the day, they seem happy. Crosby as a new dad is an easy source of humor and Jasmine is a rock star mom. These two are always going to be fun to watch.

Hank is back (thank goodness) but he isn’t with Sarah. Instead, he’s coaching Max through his new interest in photography. These characters have always worked well together. Hank is grouchy and blunt enough not to be offended by anything that Max says, and his work in photography is interesting enough that he doesn’t bore Max. Plus, Max truly has an eye for photography. Hank sees potential. Their dynamic is fun, and it looks like we’re going to see a lot more of it.

Kristina decides to run for mayor of Berkeley. Is it a shot in the dark? Probably. It’s a little ridiculous. But after a heartwarming carpe diem reminder from her cancer-stricken friend, it’s believable that Kristina would want to take the chance. She’s always been a character who isn’t afraid to try new, seemingly impossible things.

For Joel and Julia, it seems like there may still be rough waters ahead. Though they’re finally happy as a family, Julia is having issues finding work and Joel has just landed a huge construction job where his employer is a gorgeous, intelligent woman. After only one meeting, Julia seems annoyed with her. While I hope she doesn’t pose a threat to Joel and Julia’s relationship, this setup definitely suggests that she will.

With Drew away at college and Amber living on her own, Sarah is adjusting to a lonely life as a building super. Her situation could seem sad, but she’s as bright and funny as always. Her interactions with Amber are delightful.

Amber and Ryan are the highlight of the premiere. The unexpected proposal was heartwarming and perfect. Maybe they’re a little young and unprepared for marriage, but every viewer is surely rooting for them.

The premiere was quick, with few of the long lingering conversations we’ve seen in previous episodes, but a lot of important setup was done. The storylines are wide open. Each character has a clear place to go, and I’m excited about the possibilities.
