DRESS CODE

Hannah Ryu

Name: Hannah Ryu Year: Senior Major: International Studies Hometown: Long Island, N.Y. Hannah is wearing: Zara blouse, Urban Outfitters shorts, brown belt, and Target boots. What I love about Hannah’s outfit is how simple but cute it is. Hannah said that because she is from near New York City, she gets a lot of inspiration for her style from there. But, when she is at school likes to read fashion blogs and go thrifting for style tips. One of the things that really pulls Hannah’s outfit together is her boots. When she said they were from Target, I was surprised because I thought they might have been Clark’s or another more expensive brand. She said that she had heard of Clark’s and really liked them but she did not understand why she would pay more when the ones from Target were just as cute.

Anna Karam

Name: Anna Karam Year: Junior Hometown: Liberty Major: Psychology with a Women’s Studies Minor What Anna is wearing: a Banana Republic skirt with oxford-style shoes and a shirt from Forever 21. While walking to the Pit, Anna’s outfit caught my eye while she was chatting with a friend in front of the Undergraduate Library. Anna describes her personal style as vintage, comfortable and classy. She gets her style inspiration from friends and says she keeps her style current by borrowing her roommate’s clothes. Anna said she loves the trend of oxford shoes but dislikes the trend of graphic tees on campus. Anna prefers summer fashion over fall fashion because she likes that it’s more relaxed.

Blair Crumpler

Name: Blair Crumpler Year: Freshman Major: Environmental Science Hometown: Tallahassee, Fla. What Blair is wearing: Blair does a great job of defining how to dress casually while still staying trendy with this look. Cuddled up with a book at a picnic table next to the union, Blair sports a graphic tee-shirt with high waisted Urban Outfitters ripped shorts. The ripped shorts are detailed with flowered patchwork fabric that accentuates the color in her tee and ribbon headband. Blair completes her look by adding accessories like her bangle bracelets and gold earrings. Blair’s style advice: “I just dress to express my personality. Usually, I wear lots of flowy things because that represents me.”

Vote on which DTH editor needs a makeover

The Daily Tar Heel office is a world of key boards clicks, phone interviews, intense concentration… and cargo shorts. Although we love our male editors, their style just doesn’t match their writing skill. So, as any good fashion blogger would – I decided to step in and help.

Emily Anderson

Name: Emily Anderson Year: Senior Major: Economics Hometown: San Francisco, CA What Emily is wearing: a Vince shirt, J. Crew shorts and bag, Frye boots and a Michael Kors watch. With the constant change in the weather the past few days, I’ve found that it has been difficult to figure out what to wear in the mornings. But, Emily seemed to have picked out the perfect outfit for the humid weather on Wednesday afternoon. I ran into Emily on her way home from class and her outfit was so effortless and cool that I had to stop and talk to her. Emily said she gets her inspiration for her style from fashion magazines and Shopbop.com, but most of the time she just puts on what she wants and doesn’t think too much about it.

McKenna Franchik

Name: McKenna Franchik Year: Senior Major: Communication Studies – Media Production Hometown: Minneapolis, Minnesota McKenna is wearing: A Target light brown, long-sleeved leather jacket, a cream Urban Outfitters lace dress, Minnetonka brown suede moccasins and silver and turquoise stone earrings. I caught McKenna Franchik eating her lunch in the pit and looking stylish on a particularly dreary Tuesday. But after chatting with her, McKenna’s inspiring opinions on the fashion industry brightened my day. McKenna said her personal style is best described by her figure — she loves her curves and likes to accentuate them. Dresses, McKenna’s favorite piece of clothing, are a staple in her closet because of how versatile they can be just by adding a few accessories. McKenna said her favorite stores include Urban Outfitters and boutiques like Francesca’s Collections.

Campus Trend Spotter: Nail Color

The Carolina blue that is showing up on everyone’s finger nails has very little to do with school spirit. Luckily for us, we can thank the fashion world for conveniently making this season’s nail colors match those of our University.

Chapel Hill Resident Attends Fashion Week

After winning the New York City Fashion Week package at an auction last spring, Patti Tripodi, her daughter and two friends flew to New York to attend the most stylish event of the year. Since we could not report to our readers live from fashion week, the least the Dress Code crew could do was get Patti to share a little bit of her experience with us.

Simone Trotman

Name: Simone Trotman Year: Sophomore Hometown: Cary Major: Pre-Nursing Simone is wearing: A vintage off-the-shoulder Guns & Roses concert t-shirt, H&M high-waisted jean shorts and black gladiator sandals. Simone Trotman first caught my eye as a girl who’s always on the go. Packing her backpack and running out of Lenoir, I caught her just in time to have a chat about her amazing style. Simone said her personal style is always a mix of something different. Simone said she never limits her style — some days she loves being classic and simple, while others she brings out her edgier side, which is shown with her awesome Guns & Roses concert t-shirt.

New York Fashion Week

It’s that time of year again. I’m not talking about that fact that tar heel football has begun or that midterms are looming above our heads. Nope, I’m talking about the fact that New York Fashion Week officially kicked off Thursday. With more than 80 runway shows over the course of seven days (averaging approximately 10-12 shows per day), the halls of the country’s biggest fashion businesses empty, scattering assistants and interns to fend for themselves while the Anna Wintours and Jim Nelsons of the world set out to watch the biggest trends of Spring 2012 come to life.

Guys: Tips on dressing your best

To say senior Ken Jameson dresses well would be an understatement. With his dapper style and effortless charm, he has provided the dress code with great insight on men’s fashion. Ken is a member of student government, a managing associate of the Attorney General Staff, and chairman of the Feature Committee for senior marshals. After college, he said he hopes to work in business or finance.

Alexandra Dempsey

Name: Alexandra Dempsey Year: Freshman Hometown: Greensboro Major: Undecided Alexandra is wearing: A Forever 21 grey knit sweater with ¾ sleeves attached by silver buttons, Urban Outfitter white blouse with ruffles, Forever 21 mustard yellow mini skirt, and Target brown leather gladiator sandals.

Tomato, Yellow and Ocean Blue

Several times a year, designers spend hundreds of hours carefully selecting the next season’s trends — including color palettes. I researched every major runway show for Fall 2011 and found three must-have colors for fall.

Katy Denning

Name: Katy Denning Year: Junior Hometown: Raleigh Major: Journalism and Mass Communications – Graphic Design Katy is wearing: A Charlotte Russe brand black tank with bodice, Mango high-waisted light blue jeans, Vintage paisley scarf, Vintage gold disc belt, and Vintage tortoise shell sunglasses with gold frame. I literally ran into Katy Denning while coming out of Lenoir. Although Katy’s current style relies heavily on vintage pieces, she said that has not always been the case. While we were chatting, Katy told me that before she really appreciated vintage clothing she went through a skater phase (think DC shoes and Hurley clothing). Katy said her appreciation for vintage clothing began after going through her mother’s closet — where her adorable paisley scarf and gold belt are from.

Campus Trend Spotter: High Waisted Shorts (with belts!)

Why it’s cute: By tucking in your shirt and belting right above the waistline, you can effortlessly accent the smallest part of your body. In addition to being flattering on almost any body type, belting your high waisted shorts is an easy way to make a simple outfit elegantly mod. How to wear it: Whether you love animal prints or cannot get enough of bright colors, there are numerous ways to wear this ensemble. Make sure to have fun and stay true to yourself, whether that means channeling your inner ’90s style or rocking timeless pieces.

Will Davis

Name: Will Davis Age: 21 Hometown: Charlotte, NC Year: Junior Major: Public Relations Will is wearing: American Apparel chambray shirt, Levi’s khaki jeans, Topman brogue lace-up shoes, Alessi watch, Staple Ford bag, and ASOS keyhole sunglasses. I imagine a fair few people at this school would think Will is trying just a bit too hard with this outfit, yet I guarantee that on a more sartorially inclined campus, most would acknowledge Will for looking pretty darn dapper. The clothes fit him really well and I think he has put together a string of items that work really well together. Love the chambray shirt – I’ve been trying to find one of those for myself for a while, though I have never attempted to pull of a short sleeve shirt before, but it looks great on Will. Now I think it useful to note where Will sourced each particular item for this get up, stores such as: Topman, ASOS, Urban. These are all major retailers with massive collections online; if you are keen to find something for the summer, give these places a try. Anyway, it’s great to see people making an effort and I’m sure Will enjoyed strutting his stuff in this outfit!

Courtney Coppage

Name: Courtney Coppage Age: 19 Hometown: Raleigh, NC Year: First Year Major: English Now I must confess, this was not by any means an ‘on the street’ snapshot. Though I have moved away from those sorts of posts for quite some time for a number reasons, primarily because I just don’t have the time to trundle around campus with a camera this semester. So, like the big time blogger Jake Davis, I have sought to highlight certain individuals, or establishments, that have something to offer anyone looking to learn a little about style and fashionable garb. Courtney always seems to be so well put together, and often her outfits include a few really interesting pieces. Making great finds whilst ‘thrifting’ can be a real challenge, but Courtney does a good job of picking clothes that look fantastic and have some character. The top in this shot is gorgeous and I love the way it is so flattering without having to reveal a whole lot. Solid color for her as well – really nice outfit, elegant and yet so simple.

Taylor Allison x Julian's

In this second installment of the ‘Purveyors of Style’ series, if I can call it that, we have Julian’s showing off what they have to offer. Maurice Julian is a pretty big name and it has been synonymous with ‘Preppie’ in North Carolina since as far back as 1942. The current location on Franklin St. is apparently the same site where Julian set up his first store in the area in 1962. So to say Julian’s has quite the legacy in Chapel Hill would be a real understatement! Hailing from New England, Maurice Julian at first sought to import the trends from the North East into our Southern gem of a town. However, when you head into Julian’s you will not find the staples of ‘Ivy style’, instead you will be see a store awash with color and crazy patterns – just what the Southern Gentleman needs! I know it may seem that I put a great deal of focus on ‘Preppie’ style in this blog, but I feel that it is important to emphasize how important the look has been in this area. Obviously times change and all that, but personal style is often timeless, and I believe that there will always be a place for Julian’s and ‘Southern Prep’ in Chapel Hill. Taylor models a couple of sharp looks in this post, thanks to the help of the Julian’s staff. The Vans were definitely Taylor’s addition – he is still a skater boy at heart and it is always great to see him pull off outfits (even a tuxedo) while rocking those classic shoes. I wanted to include a shot of the shirt from behind to show off how cool it was – I have seen a fair few white oxfords with a blue pinstripe collar, though I have never come across such a wild design as this one, and it even had the matching elbow patches as well. The deconstructed material of the blazer makes it a really solid option in this weather and there is no denying that Taylor looks pretty swish! The second get-up was a lot more casual, but he is still keeping it classy. The jean is a linen blend, which is an interesting move, but I think people should really consider linen shirts and trousers this spring/summer – its feels so light and will keep you cool as the temperatures rise. Anyway, two outfits that are full of color and ooze class. Nice one.

Sara Akhavan x Uniquities

Part II

Name: Sara Akhavan Age: 19 Hometown: Charlotte, NC Year: Sophomore Major: Advertising, Entrepreneurship Wearing: Mai Tai dress House of Harlow sunglasses Design History shawl Diane von Furstenberg shoes Big thanks to Sara for helping out with these shots with Uniquities – looking glamourous as per usual! This outfit might be a bit much for a walk to class, but for when the weather is cool enough and you have the time to relax, this is a lovely get-up. The shawl is perfect for when the evenings are still chilly and I like the dress a lot – show off your shapeliness at every opportunity I say! The House of Harlow sunglasses work really well for Sara here, I’m always on the look out for a solid pair myself – Persol are going to be big this year by the way, so check them out. Shame the shoes are completely washed out by the sun, but trust me, they were fancy.
