DTH at a Glance

The only material good millennials buy is wine. Also, it's our birthday!

I don't remember the last material thing I spent money on that didn't come with napkins or a little black mixing straw. And like most broad-sweeping generalizations that can't be blamed on my astrological sign, it's evidently because I'm a millennial.

A recent study found that my kind are super into spending money on experiences — think "my trip to New York," "the May 3 BeyoncĂ© concert" or "Chipotle" (Chipotle is an experience; you can't tell me otherwise) — rather than possessions. Something about our lack of a foreseeable financial future and the fact that a Spring Break trip is worth more Insta likes than a picture of your new steam iron.

QUICK HITS

  • As part of an ongoing series following a specific student's struggles with mental health in college, we discuss the tells and warning signs that can indicate someone is having a difficult time and might need to seek help.
  • UNC wrestling fell 33-6 to Oklahoma State on Friday before it rallied for a crushing 33-12 win over the Citadel two days later.
  • Bad news for the overall Tumblr aesthetic of Chapel Hill: Smoking e-cigarettes might no longer be cool in Orange County restaurants and bars.
  • With the death of Justice Antonin Scalia, court decisions on issues like North Carolina's gerrymandering could be at risk of a tie on the Supreme Court — which would complicate the heck out of things.

IN SNAKE PERSON NEWS

Millennials place all their value on experiences, not material goods. It's a generational trend picked up on by a study from Harris Poll and Eventbrite Inc. We millennials would rather spend our money on a nice Spring Break or a concert than whatever an old person would spend money on — a new toaster oven?

IN SPORTS HEALTH

Former NCAA student-athletes are better off in terms of well-being, according to a recent Gallup survey. Student-athletes scored better than non-athletic peers, which suggest there might be some truth behind the belief that physical exercise can help with social and mental well-being. It's still a cost-benefit I'm not willing to get behind.

IN OUR OPINION

For columnist Alice Wilder, the Carolina Women's Center is a home away from home. She can go there for support and resources on whatever it is she's feeling, or she can just sit down and get a cup of tea. It's a homey, comfortable space for all of college's bad days. Like the taste of a Cook-Out tray embodied in an office.

IN SELF-LOVE

Today marks The Daily Tar Heel's official 123rd birthday. We might not be able to make a bunch of Taylor Swift "22" jokes on Instagram this year, but we did compile 27 reasons why we and our alumni, like former StatNat editor and superhuman Maddy Will, love this newspaper so much.
