DTH at a Glance: A new twist on email newsletters

Tar...Heel...Tar...Heel! Good morning UNC students, here’s are the updates from yours truly in the DTH office!

We promise we're not even the strangest newsletter in this newsletter — read on for more info on a local principal's missives and a former Trump advisor's visit to campus:

QUICK HITS

  • “America is the greatest nation that man ever made. Israel is the greatest nation that God ever made.” Last night, Sebastian Gorka, a Fox News contributor and former member of the Trump administration, spoke about Israel-U.S. relations in Genome Science Building amid protests.
  • "When I went to school girls took toilet paper and stuffed it in their…….anyway, we had to go around, clean out toilets and replace the paper." Chapel Hill High School’s interim principal Steve Scroggs used profane language, derogatory slang and sexual references to make sure his newsletter was read thoroughly.
  • Biking to Med Deli shouldn’t only be for the "fearless cyclist." Chapel Hill has adopted a plan to increase bicycle-friendliness and transit options by 2025.
  • The future is bright for the 2018 class of men’s basketball. Three top-tier recruits have committed to the team, and UNC has high hopes to snag No. 2 overall recruit Zion Williamson.

CURRICULUM AND UNIONS

  • Fifty years ago, Black students “wanted to take control of their own experience and provide a space to be black comfortable” when they founded the Black Student Movement. Since then, the BSM has provided a rich and relevant impact on campus.
  • The School of Media and Journalism is slimming down. It's transitioning from eight concentrations to two: Journalism and Advertising and Public Relations.

FROM OPINION

  • OPINION: “And yet, scapegoats keep being placed on an eternal altar. History, alas, seems perpetually doomed to repeat itself. Harvey Weinstein will not be the last scapegoat sacrificed on the altar.”
  • COLUMN: "We can harness nationalism’s unifying power, without descending into bigoted tyranny.” Will Parker examines the lack of mass appeal for the libertarian ideology.
  • COLUMN: The DTH and Axios are launching the Smarter Faster Revolution on Thursday — here's why we think you should attend.
