DTH at a Glance: ...In Friday’s Recitation...

UNC, it’s Friday! We’ve worked hard through the first full week of classes this semester, and it’s time to have a relaxing weekend — but before you do, you might face a little social anxiety in lecture, or find your loans are stressing you out. Nevertheless, here’s the news to ease your weekend transition:

QUICK HITS

  • “‘Becoming a Woman’ poses the question: are we truly alienated from the past?” Ackland Art museum’s newest 130-piece exhibit explores the socialization and adaptation of French women in the eighteenth century.
  • COLUMN: “To me, it’s simple: there is absolutely nothing wrong with a power forward or center working on a 3-point shot, but he cannot fall in love with it.” Sports editor Chapel Fowler examines the new toy of professional basketball, its yields and why it’s a disservice to players.
  • One of the first Black undergraduate students admitted to UNC has died due to complications with cancer. But even past death, John Lewis Brandon’s legacy lives on.

UNIVERSITY NEWS

  • In the face of students with social anxiety, instructors are looking for alternative methods of calculating class participation.
  • "People interact with the landscape, and they don’t only see trees. They see histories of their family – they see nationality.” A UNC professor has travelled to Puerto Rico to tell the stories of rural communities with clean water after Hurricane Maria.
  • Remodeling for consistency and creating a prominent entrance to the Town of Chapel Hill are just two of the goals UNC Health Care lists in a proposal for the redevelopment of Eastowne Drive buildings.

STATE AND NATIONAL

  • North Carolina Attorney General Josh Stein’s three-part traveling lecture came to Chapel Hill yesterday, where he tackled sexual assault, drug misuse, and student loans.
  • “North Carolina is a 50-50 state, but the reason we’re not functioning like that on a political level is because of gerrymandering.” Congressional redistricting has sparked debate among state lawmakers, who are facing added pressure from upcoming midterm elections.
  • An increase in debt, an increase in stress: students — especially those from affluent families — who take out loans to pay for college find difficulty in bearing the weight of borrowing and its mental toll.
