BY Molly Looman

Good Morning and Happy Wednesday!

I consider myself an above-average home baker. I make bread and big cakes and a lot of things that people tend to shy away from because they take nine hours.

Yesterday was my low, however. I wanted to make chocolate chip cookies, but I had no butter and it was nighttime, so I went to the CVS on my way home. They don't sell butter ... they sell Country Crock. I forgot that Country Crock is not butter until I got home.

But I forged ahead thinking, "Hey. Maybe this will be one of those discovery moments I'll tell my kids about when they ask for my secret recipe. I'll tell them how I messed up and ended up with a happy accident."

This was not one of those moments. The cookies are fine, but they are weird and not what you want. On the flip side, my baking has been done well before. Here is a column I wrote for our mail-home edition that goes to incoming first years about making friends and taking the leap.
