Tar Heels advance to national championship on penalty kicks

In the second instance of penalty kicks on the day, the top-seeded North Carolina men’s soccer team advances to the national championship, ousting UCLA.

After 110 minutes of battling on the field at Regions Park and remaining deadlocked at a score of 2-2, the Tar Heels and the Bruins headed to penalty kicks to decide who would play UNC Charlotte for the title on Sunday in Hoover, Ala.

For UNC, Kirk Urso, Drew McKinney and Ben Speas all tallied, while Scott Goodwin managed to save the Bruins’ first two attempts and a fourth went wide left. UNC took the shootout 3-1.

UNC hasn’t brought home a national title since 2001, and UNC Charlotte will be seeking its first.
