Athletic Department aware of Hairston situation

Sophomore guard P.J. Hairston was arrested last night and charged with marijuana possession, according to a statement released by the Durham Police Department.

The statement says Hairston was stopped at a random license check on Holloway Street, and he and two other passengers were charged with possession.

Hairston was also charged with driving without a license, reports state.

Kammie Michael, a public information officer for the department, said a full police report will not be available until tomorrow at the earliest.

Steve Kirschner, spokesman for the UNC Athletics Department, said in a statement that coach Roy Williams and Athletic Director Bubba Cunningham were aware of a situation involving Hairston, who announced in April that he would return to UNC for his junior season.

“We’re currently looking into it to gather the facts,” Kirschner said in a statement. “We will issue a statement when we have enough information to do so.”

Hairston first earned a starting spot on the team for the Duke game in February. He averaged a team-high 14.6 points per game last season and knocked down 89 three-pointers, the second highest single-season total in UNC history.

More information will be reported on the arrest as it becomes available.
