No. 3 UNC leads California 2-0 at half

Goals by Nina Notman and Loren Shealy have keyed the No. 3 North Carolina field hockey team to a 2-0 halftime lead against California at Henry Stadium.

The Tar Heels (8-2, 1-2 ACC) outshot the Golden Bears 24-1 in a lopsided opening half. California (4-6) goalkeeper Courtney Hendrickson’s 13 saves, some of which were acrobatic, have kept her team within reach of UNC.

Notman struck on a penalty corner just 3:38 into the game when her shot off a penalty corner deflected off a California defender and into the upper reaches of the net. Notman, a six-foot defender from Germany, leads the Tar Heels with seven goals.

After Hendrickson repeatedly thwarted a spate of promising UNC attacks, Shealy found the back of the net off a broken play. The junior forward found a loose ball at the near post, stickhandled around the outstretched Hendrickson and tucked her fifth goal of the year into the far corner.

UNC is once again without junior forward Charlotte Craddock (strained muscle in right leg) and junior defender Abby Frey (injuries suffered during a scooter accident Friday).
