Christine O'Donnell — can she actually win?

Christine O’Donnell, the rogue Republican candidate for Senate in Delaware, has garnered national attention recently. Who exactly is she? And can she win in the general elections?

O’Donnell, a Sarah Palin-endorsed and Tea Party-backed candidate, recently defeated Rep. Mike Castle, the incumbent representative in the Republican primary.

O’Donnell is steadfastly against “socialist” policies and has sparked controversy over her views against homosexuality and masturbation.

Inquiries into past financial problems might pose a problem for O’Donnell’s campaign.

ABC News recently reported that there is concern about the Republican candidate’s unpaid taxes and college loans as well as a possible misuse of campaign funds.

For a candidate running to restore fiscal responsibility, these could be grave concerns.

While she many have pulled off the seemingly impossible by defeating Rep. Castle, students at UNC said her chances of defeating a Democrat come November don’t seem as strong.

Her Democratic opponent in the Senate race, Chris Coons, is well known in the Delaware area and has support of the established Democratic party.

“I think she will be destroyed come November,” said Whitney Davis, a journalism and political science double major at UNC.

The Tea Partiers are gaining in national momentum — splitting the support for the Republican party.

Andrew Getty, a senior political science and international studies double-major, said the Tea Paty is an extreme fragment of the GOP.

“The Tea Party shot themselves in the foot,” Getty said. “They will lose moderates and independents.”
