Marshall supporters show support

Supporters of Elaine Marshall, the Democratic challenger for U.S.Senate, harbor positive outlooks at the Brownstone Hotel in Raleigh as they wait for election results.

Marshall is running against Republican incumbent U.S. Sen. Richard Burr.

Classic rock is playing in the background of the Washington Conference Room as people gather to support the candidate that they hope will support their beliefs.

But does Marshall have a chance?

“Absolutely, I think Elaine has a very good shot at winning, I don’t think by a whole lot, but I think that she will edge it out,” said Clay Desouza of Burlington, N.C.

“A lot of people are counting her out just from the polls and all, but you know you got to stay optimistic if you are on our side. She has pulled it out before and I believe she can do it again tonight,” he said.

“It is not over until it is over. Elaine shocked everybody when she won the primary both times, so I would not be surprised to see her get a win tonight,” said Jeff DeLuca, a sophomore political science major at UNC Chapel Hill. “I am really looking forward to see what happens tonight.”

“The polling has not been great, she has definitely had that gap that was there, but I think the biggest hope she has is as far as undecided voters go, because we still have high percentage of undecided voters — over double digits,” said Billy Kluttz, a junior political science and women’s studies double major at UNC. “Hopefully they will break in her favor. I also think anti-incumbent sentiments might help, but we will see.”
