Johnston County schools regulate lip balm use

It might seem harmless, but according to a N.C. school system, the use of lip balm was dangerous enough to be regulated.

Recently, controversy erupted when Johnston County schools’ required students to have parental permission to use lip balm.

But after getting statewide attention for this policy, Edward Croom, the superintendent of Johnson County Schools, said in a letter that students would be allowed to bring lip balm unless a parent writes a note forbidding his or her child from using it.

Terri Sessoms, spokeswoman for Johnson County Schools, said the media publicity caused the regulations to become a bigger issue than it was.

“We always let students know that sharing those items is not a good idea,” she said.

But Johnston county is not the only one changing its policies to combat the upcoming flu season.

Jen Richmond-Bryant, a Chapel Hill resident and mother of a third grader, said she feels local schools are doing enough in terms of health care.

“They probably have enough to do,” she said.

“They should use their resources for education purposes.”
