Pit Talk

Students read banned books, tape mouths for First Amendment Day

Students in the Pit gathered today to talk about their right to, well, talk.

It was a celebration of First Amendment Day, which commemorates freedom of speech for American citizens.

A stand in the middle of the Pit displayed a few dozen books that have been banned in the past, including “Where the Wild the Wild Things Are,” which was banned for its “subversive psychoanalytic overtones,” according to a note accompanying the display.

Student Body President Jasmin Jones took part in the reading of the banned books, reciting an excerpt from "Fahrenheit 451" by Ray Bradbury.

Other banned titles include "Harry Potter and the Sorceror's Stone" by J.K Rowling and "The Catcher in the Rye" by J.D. Salinger.

The Carolina Association of Black Journalists also sent a powerful message by having members of the organization wear tape over their mouths with a sign describing three Supreme Court cases related to the First Amendment.
