The end of No Shave November: A true cause for celebration

We’re right in the middle of the holiday season. Thanksgiving is over and we still have Christmas, Hanukkah and New Year's eve approaching.

Yet the only thing I feel like celebrating today is the end of "No Shave November."

It might be because I don’t have facial hair, but I can’t understand the November phenomenon of trying to grow as much of it as possible.

I’ve tried to understand. I really have. I spent all of November around a variety of guys for whom the month would be better described as "Nothing to Shave November." Looking at them with their patchy beards and peach fuzz mustaches, I’ve asked why they chose to participate. The most common answer: “It’s No-Shave November.”

Maybe attempting to grow a beard is a testament to manhood, or a way to save money on razors and shaving cream right before hunting for a present your mom will actually like. One Facebook group for "No Shave November" even links to an online donation site for the Mental Health Foundation.

Whatever the reason, "No Shave November" is officially over. Clean-shaven guys are abundant on campus again, and I can walk into the Union without being disgusted by meager attempts at facial hair.

It truly is the season for celebration.
