Students turn Polk Place red

Students with red glow sticks huddled together Friday to form the shape of the red ribbon on Polk Place.

They had gathered to observe World AIDS Day, which raises awareness about the disease and research combatting it. The event was hosted by GlobeMed and other campus organizations. Proceeds came from ticket sales and outright donations, which added up to more than $460, said Jared Lowe, co-president of GlobeMed. The money went directly to GlobeMed’s partnership with Health Alert Uganda.

The event began with a brief introduction from Executive Assosciate Provost Ron Strauss, who teaches a course about AIDS.

“UNC is a major center of AIDS research; big things are happening on campus,” he said.

GlobeMed is one of the 19 established chapters nation-wide that works with partners in other countries to raise money to improve the health of people living in poverty. GlobeMed at UNC specifically works people affected with HIV/AIDS living in a town called Gulu, Uganda.

Lowe said he was pleased with this year’s Turn It Red.

“Overall the event was phenomenal,” Lowe said. “The ribbon picture turned out well even though there was lower turnout than we expected. It was really cold.”
