Top 5 ways to save money: Free entertainment

This list began life as just a bunch of tips on finding cheap entertainment. But then I realized that there are so many options that are completely free that I decided to change the scope of this list altogether. I mean, why pay for entertainment (even if it’s really cheap) if you don’t have to? Here are some things for you to try:

Rent movies for free
Each residence community’s office has its own DVD library. The ones I’ve seen have everything from movies to TV series to workout videos. If you don’t live on campus, you can check out the Media Resources Center in the basement of the Undergraduate Library. The MRC has a huge collection of movies, which can be searched for here and borrowed with a UNC One Card.

Volunteer
There is no shortage of opportunities to volunteer on UNC’s campus or in the Chapel Hill-Carrboro area. If you like the outdoors, there’s Habitat for Humanity builds and gardening with HOPE gardens. If the indoors suit you better, you might try tutoring ESL with MANO or working at animal shelters with Carolina Helping Paws.

Try a new exercise class at the SRC or Ram’s Head
There are so many to choose from- I challenge you to try one outside of your comfort zone! Classes are offered seven days a week, and the schedules can be found here. From Absolution to Ballet Sculpt, Pilates to Water Aerobics, and Cardio Pump to Muscle Cut there is something for all fitness levels, abilities, and interests!

Knock a few items off your UNC bucket list
If you’re following The Daily Tar Heel’s list, you can find plenty of ideas for free fun. Why not hang a hammock and picnic in the arboretum (#34) or go swimming in Jordan Lake (#68)? If you’d rather, make your own bucket list for your remaining time at UNC and start checking things off!

Attend a CUAB movie
The Carolina Union Activities Board does a great job rounding up movies of interest to show on Friday and Saturday nights throughout the year. Coming up this weekend is The Avengers and Moonrise Kingdom. All movies are shown in the Carolina Union Auditorium. Check out the posters around campus for other showings, dates, and times.
