Recipe of the Week: Attack of the mummy snack

Although Thanksgiving usually takes the cake (no pun intended) for the holiday with the most delicious food, Halloween definitely has the tastiest desserts.

Homemade treats made especially for Hallow’s Eve are even better than the standard trick-or-treat candy. I found the recipe for these Oreo mummies online here.

They fit my criteria of looking both festive and delectable.

The ingredients are:

1 package (8 oz.) cream cheese
36 Oreos finely crushed
14 oz. white chocolate

There are a lot of ways to experiment with this recipe. You can replace the chocolate Oreos for golden Oreos to create a more vanilla flavor. I chose the chocolate Oreos because I thought the black and white was consistent with the Halloween theme.

The cream cheese could also be replaced with peanut butter.

First, I began by crushing up the Oreos. I used a rolling pin to literally smack and beat the unopened box of Oreos. Warn your neighbors — this makes a lot of noise.

I then put the crushed up Oreos into a bowl and added cream cheese. I used my hands to thoroughly mix the two together.

Next, I rolled them into balls. I made mine different sizes because mummies come in all kinds of sizes. Ideally, you should put the them onto a piece of wax paper, but because I didn’t have any, I cut up a trash bag and that worked just as well.

I melted the white chocolate by putting it in the microwave and stirring every 30 seconds until it was melted. I dipped the Oreo balls into the melted chocolate, completely covering them. I put them in the fridge until they hardened.

I drizzled additional white chocolate onto the top of the dipped Oreos to look like bandages on a mummy.

Immediately after drizzling the chocolate, I placed two semi-sweet
chocolate chips on the balls for eyes. Though some look more like ghosts than mummies, each one was cute and tasty.

I had a few friends on my hall try them and received a really good response.

“Mmmmmm…these are delicious,” sophomore Rebecca Stephenson said in between bites. Rebecca said she thought substituting the cream cheese with peanut butter would make them even tastier.

My Resident Advisor, senior Laura Biesack, agreed with Stephenson.
“They’re the perfect Halloween treat,” Biesack said. “No tricks, just treat.”
