Pit Talk

Hot dog eating contests are all you could have hoped for. I found myself surrounded by hungry guys hovered around tables with plates stacked full of hot dogs in the living room of a frat house.

Pi Lambda Phi fraternity held its First Annual Hot Dog Eating Contest where about 20 fraternity brothers each consumed ten hot dogs in a timed race to win Duke vs. UNC and NC STATE vs. UNC tickets.

Nikko Carlson, a 2012 alum and a member of Pi Lam, took first place finishing his plate of ten hot dogs and buns in a record ten minutes.

He said he prepared by fasting and watching a sort of sports science on ESPN on how to effectively compete in a hot dog eating contest.

“I didn’t eat anything today, and I watched a lot of YouTube videos,” Carlson said.

Sophomore Alec Loeb shared his excitement before consuming ten hot dogs in 13 minutes.

“I am going to eat a lot of hot dogs and win,” said sophomore Alec Loeb before the contest.

Loeb, who was favored by the rowdy crowd, preceded to win second place and a set of Duke vs. UNC basketball tickets.

Junior Luke Richardson expected Loeb to take first place.

“Nikko Carlson defeating Loeb is the upset of the century,” Richardson said. “I am so shocked right now. Everything I know is a lie.”

Sophomore Robert Harrison, who helped organize the event, originally expected around 40 people to compete. He said that while the number of people eating in the contest fell short, they still did well financially because they sold hot dogs and t-shirts at the competition.

“It was a success overall but next year we just hope to have more people compete,” Harrison said.

Hot Dogs & Brew, a restaurant on Franklin Street, sponsored the hot dog eating contest and provided 500 hot dogs. All proceeds will benefit TABLE in Carrboro, an organization that partners with UNC students to feed local low-income children.

There are many things I would do to win UNC vs. Duke basketball tickets but this is not one of them. Something about dipping hot dogs in water to rapidly consume them makes my stomach queasy. I think I will be avoiding hot dogs for quite some time.
