Jamming at Greek Groove 2016

Greek Groove performance the UNC Center of Excellence for Eating Disorders was magical, to say the least.

Sorority girls got down to the tunes of Beyonce, Little Mix, Nicki Minaj and others in Memorial Hall. Not only did they get down and dirty with some sexy twerking and step dancing, but some girls even took to the skies with high flying moves straight out of a cheerleader competition.

Each sorority brought it’s A-game with dance routines straight out of the set of Step Up 90. Some notable themes include Tri Sigma’s Most Wanted, KKG’s SportsCenter redux and Phi Mu’s Rev Up Your Engines.

In the end, Chi Omega hit a home run with their third place apple-pie-perfect American routine, Alpha Delta Pi took home second place with their homage to Katniss Everdeen in their Hunger Games performance, and Kappa Delta transformed the first place win with their fantastic Transformers light show.

Being in the crowd was enough to give me chills on several occasions, and the Clef Hangers and Cadence performances only added to the wonder.

All the dancing aside, all the money raised goes to Philanthropy services, from CEED to those Philanthropy efforts of the individual sororities. In total, UNC Panhellenic raised close to 27,000 dollars for CEED, money that will help those suffering from eating disorders on campus and in Chapel Hill.

However, the best part of Greek Groove wasn’t the dancing, or the money or the flashy light shows and awesome music.

It was the sisterhood.

Cheesy as that may sound, there’s something particularly wonderful about being surrounded by girl power. And that’s what it was. Up on the stage, in the row behind me, behind the curtains and in the loud and sometimes raunchy music.

I may not have been dancing in Greek Groove, but I was participating, and more than that I was living it. I was supporting my friends, my sisters and my family just by being there, and I was celebrating all things girl-mazing by screaming in that audience.

So say what you will about sorority girls, but know how to dance and, more importantly, we know how to celebrate girl power in a way that’s fun, sexy, and in.
