Review: Being a first-year at UNC

I am still unwilling/unable to accept the fact that in about three weeks I will be one fourth of the way finished with college and that much closer to the impending doom that I associate with adulthood.

With that in mind, here is my review of my first year, Yelp review style:

Overall, I would give the experience 4.8 stars out of 5. I'd dock 0.2 stars due to accumulated lack of sleep, the insanely high humidity and the concerning amount of pollen.

Honestly, 2015-2016 was an A+ year to be a Tar Heel sports fan. I had no idea what to expect going in, and I was pleasantly surprised.

Getting to witness the football team go undefeated at home and play for the ACC Championship was an excellent way to start the year and the perfect lead into basketball season.

Still on the topic of sports, the basketball team's inspiring performance was a great way to spend spring semester, especially the entire month of March.

Another key part of my first year is learning to navigate a confined space all while sharing it with another person, which is honestly not bad at all. It helped that my roommate and I bonded over a shared love for the basketball team and Netflix.

There's a lot of personal growth that takes place your first year of college, and I'd say that I did some growing. I've learned a lot about myself. For example, I now know that I can now successfully prepare a variety of soups in a microwave without setting off a fire alarm.

Academically, I have learned the importance of sitting at the front of the classroom — especially when that classroom is filled with 200 other people. I've also learned how to somewhat successfully navigate and survive finals. They aren't as bad as they seem but should by no means be taken lightly.

In conclusion, a first year at UNC is a pretty special experience and I wouldn't trade the humidity, pollen or accumulated lack of sleep for any other experience.
