At the beginning of the month my RA updated the hall bulletin board to my favorite theme thus far: “Things Everyone Thinks.” I have now stopped at least four times to read it in its entirety and it never ceases to make me laugh out loud. I now share it’s contents with you.
UNC Women’s Rugby Club has qualified for the Sweet Sixteen National Championship. This is great for the team, but because it will take place in Michigan, the team needs to raise $5000 in two weeks.
Today the Campus Y held their first annual Tie-dye and Paint Party. Students listened to music, enjoyed watermelon slices and popsicles, and helped each other design their t-shirts and make wall-art. The event took place in the court yard in front of the YMCA building and had a decent turn out of Campus Y members and other students interested in the organization.
Most students go to UNC Student Stores to buy textbooks, try on basketball jerseys, or even check out the magazines at Bull’s Head Bookshop . Erin Edwards, however, goes there to ride the escalators with her golden retriever, Duncan. Edwards, a 3L at UNC School of Law and a chemistry major from UNC-Greensboro , trains service dogs for owners with diabetic issues and physical disabilities as a puppy parent for Carrboro-based Eyes Ears Nose and Paws . “He was afraid of the escalator for a long time,” Edwards said of Duncan. “We go up and down the escalator almost every day, and I give him treats on the escalator to teach him not to be afraid of it. I reinforce what he learns when he’s at school, and they teach him the hardest stuff. I think the people at the bookstore get a big kick out of it.”
Joel Salatin spoke to a packed crowd in the Hanes Art Center Auditorium Wednesday evening. His twelve-point speech focused on debunking common myths about building a local, sustainable food economy. Salatin is well-known for his books speaking out about the issues plaguing America’s current industrialized food system and about how the average consumer can support a more sustainable, healthier, local food system in the United States.
It’s never a surprise when UNC is added to another prestigious list, whether it’s being named Best Public Value School in the country or “Most Entrepreneurial Campus,” among others. But a new ranking by The Daily Beast, an online reporting and opinion website, places UNC in the top 50 most stressful colleges in America.
Reports of an armed robbery and a violent hate crime on campus in the past week have left some students clamoring for discussion about the University’s safety measures and the way it alerts its students. Freshman Quinn Matney’s account of his April 4 attack and branding by a man outside of Craige residence hall have spurred University officials to name the incident a hate crime, since Matney is gay. The event went unreported to students and was posted on AlertCarolina one week later.
On a whim I decided to send in my own Kvetch about something that had been bothering me the entire semester, and it was a thought that I had shared with some classmates that had also shared the same view as me on the “issue.”
Two weeks ago, I was at Wilson Library exploring “From Di-Phis to Loreleis,” when an exhibit in the corner caught my eye. Eng and Chang Bunker, Siamese twins, were staring at me from their blown-up photograph! I thought to myself, “Why are these two men in the same room as memorabilia from the UNC basketball team? Where is the NC connection, Wilson Library Collection?” In 1811 Eng and Chang Bunker were born in Thailand (then Siam) in a fishing village called Meklong. Joined at the chest, the conjoined twins traveled Europe, the United States, Canada and the Caribbean as part of a sideshow for P.T. Barnum.
The Maple View Challenge is a 5k race through Chapel Hill and Carrboro, similar to NC States’ Krispy Kreme Challenge. Participants run half of the race and down a pint of delicious Maple View ice cream before heading back to the finish line.

An April day at UNC is full of extraordinary beauty, from trees with delicate pink blossoms to skies that showcase our school’s spirit. But April is also the perfect time to experience celestial wonders on warm nights. According to UNC’s Morehead Planetarium website, this month is best for observing Saturn, the second largest planet in our solar system and the one with the most fabulous rings.
Sometimes they’re annoying, other times, maybe a little scary. But if you try to feed the squirrels on campus, they’re instantly friendly. The squirrels around campus are considered ““urban squirrels,” according to Squirrels.org. (Yep, that’s an actual website. It will tell you all you ever wanted to know about squirrels.)
During the day, chances are you’ll find sophomore Julian Caldwell at UNC’s School of Journalism , taking classes in the electronic communication track and learning about sports journalism. Outside the classroom, however, don’t be surprised if you find him rapping in the Media Resources Center in the basement of the R. B. House Undergraduate Library . Chances are, you might just hear him recording his latest rap songs.
Well ladies and gentlemen, it looks like the weather has finally realized that it is, in fact, spring and not winter. Granted, we all know North Carolina weather to be a tease. Nevertheless, I’m feeling optimistic. Here are 10 things to remember: 1. Watch out for cyclists. It was only about six months ago that a cyclist nearly took my life at the intersection of Cameron and Raleigh St. This is serious stuff, folks.
UNC is a basketball school. You know it, I know it. The campus squirrels probably know it. Football is arguably the runner-up. The campus gears up, grills and gathers ‘round for every game. But what about America’s favorite pastime? Friday evening I attended the UNC-Clemson baseball game and peers, I am appalled. A patch of old women wearing red, a cluster of high school players in green and a surprising number of traveling Clemson fans easily equalled or outnumbered the sad, scattered members in Carolina blue.

On campus, students have weighed in lately on the appropriateness of his lyrics and whether they fit in with the University’s values. Wait until they check out the EA game behind the concert competition. Videos and reviews have recently surfaced about Bulletstorm , the video game at the center of EA’s Snoop Dogg contest.
