Be special-savvy this LDOC

The last day of spring classes usually brings hoards of students to downtown Chapel Hill for one last night of fun before finals begin, and many local business owners expect tomorrow to be no different.

In addition to various on-campus events, many businesses on Franklin Street and Rosemary Street will offer deals or special events for the celebration.

La Residence on West Rosemary Street plans to offer drink specials and a DJ for late night traffic.

“We pretty much do our Saturday set-up,” Manager John Gualtieri said.

Gualtieri said LDOC generally absorbs much of the traffic expected on other week nights.

“It’ll be busy for us, typically we mark it on our calendars months in advance,” he said.

Pantana Bob’s on West Rosemary Street will also offer specials and feature the band Liquid Pleasure from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., with a DJ later at night.

“We do a fair amount of student business anyway at late night and in the afternoons after classes… but I’m sure that (this) will be bigger,” said Manager Grey Robinson.

In addition to offering $1 lemonade and $2 original and cinnamon sugar pretzels, the joint Ben & Jerry’s and Auntie Anne’s Pretzels on Franklin Street will be catering several events on campus, including UNC Residence Hall Association events at several dorms.

But some businesses say that despite the expected increase in student customers, they won’t be offering any additional events for LDOC.

Sugarland Nick Richardson said while they expect an increase in students, they won’t be offering any deals.

“We generally see a big uptake in walk-in traffic anyway,” he said.
Bandido’s Mexican Café will also just be offering their regular Wednesday deal — 25 percent off with a student ID.

And while Linda’s Bar and Grill hosts weekly trivia on Wednesdays and will offer their regular dollar-off all N.C. drafts, owner Chris Carini said the bar may offer specials, but he hasn’t decided what yet.

He said he is unsure how many additional students will show up.
“There’s really no way to tell,” he said.
