Council hears from committee about successes after last year's Yates Raid

Following a brief petition to move the discussion of the Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. and Estes Drive Focus Area, the Chapel Hill Town Council quickly flew through the remaining items during its Oct. 24 meeting.

The council heard from Ron Bogle, the committee chair of the Community Policing Advisory Committee about its past successes and future ambitions for the police department.

The Community Policing Advisory Committee was created in response to the Yates Motor Company building incident last fall when Chapel Hill police wielding assault weapons raided the Occupy Chapel Hill encampment of the building. The department later received widespread criticism for its use of force during the incident.

Bogle said the committee has worked to assess policies concerning police response to public demonstrations.

“The Yates Building was by no means the defining moment of the committee last year,” said Bogle, who said he is proud of his committee of policymakers versus law enforcement professionals.

The town council also advised a planning group on the Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. and Estes Drive Focus Area. The group shared information on the economic development and the future of transportation in the area.

The town council also approved a special use permit and a master land use plan modification for The Learning Center, a 10,000 square foot child development center to be located at the corner of N.C. Hwy. 54 East and East Barbee Chapel Road.

In a last minute vote, the council passed a motion to not accept any new ads on Chapel Hill Transit buses. The ad program has caught fire in recent months after an ad calling for the end of U.S. aid to Israel ran on buses.

Quotable:

“I don’t want them to think they’ve fulfilled their commitment to this council, I want them to know they’ve fulfilled their commitment to this council,” said Town Councilwoman Donna Bell to Bogle.
