Hillsborough farm supplies residents with local turkeys this Thanksgiving

Chapel Hill residents in search of locally grown produce for their Thanksgiving feast are in luck.

Coon Rock Farm, located in Hillsborough, is a family farm that provides fresh produce and humanely raised meats year round to residents in Orange County.

Jamie DeMent and Richard Holcomb started Coon Rock Farm in 2004 — the same year they started Zely and Ritz, a local Organic restaurant.

Since then, the business has grown into the Eno Hospitality Group, which now includes Piedmont Restaurant and a home delivery service for fresh produce.

DeMent said they are currently taking orders for humanely raised and killed turkeys for Thanksgiving Thursday.

“All of our birds are completely pasture raised and heritage breeds,” she said. “It’s much more humane and clean than the giant factory facilities where other birds come from,” she said.

Turkeys are only available for Thanksgiving and Christmas — but chickens, eggs, sheep and cows are available year round for purchase.

If customers want to go meatless this Thanksgiving, Coon Rock Farm also sells fresh seasonal produce. DeMent said there are plenty of options to fill a Thanksgiving table at the Farm right now.

“We have sweet potatoes, squash, and every green you could imagine,” she said.

The farm supplies locals with produce year round, not just during the holidays.

“We also have a CSA program, which is Community Supported Agriculture, which is a subscription program, where you sign up at the beginning of the season and get boxes of produce every week,” DeMent said.

Produce and meats from Coon Rock Farm are available weekly at the Midtown Farmers Market in Raleigh, The Western Wake Farmers Market in Cary, and the Chapel Hill Farmers Market.
