Carrboro Aldermen discuss downtown traffic

The Carrboro Board of Aldermen met Tuesday night to discuss downtown traffic circulation, specifically intersections with high traffic volume.

Jeff Brubaker, Carrboro’s transportation planner, presented information on traffic circulation and changes that could occur after approved developments are built in 2014. Changes to traffic would include the flow of vehicles, bicycles, and pedestrians.

Analyses for several intersections in downtown Carrboro were presented in the report, with a focus on intersections with the most pressing traffic issues.

It was suggested that Carrboro and Chapel Hill work together to discuss the Main Street, Franklin Street, Merritt Mill Road and Brewer Lane intersections, rather than having the N.C. Department of Transportation do it alone.

Mayor Mark Chilton asked the staff to establish communication with Chapel Hill to map out what may happen with the intersection, taking into consideration the driveway of a new parking deck.

Notable:

The Board of Aldermen also discussed tree replacement requirements in downtown Carrboro. There was concern that the number of trees subject for removal was increasing.

Quotable:

“I want trees everywhere, not just one place. So, no tree zoos,” said Alderwoman Jacquelyn Gist. Gist proposed the town consider taking steps to protect of the downtown trees.
