New solid waste truck coming to Carrboro

A new solid waste truck will be making its way through the streets of Carrboro after the Board of Aldermen unanimously approved the acquisition of the truck during its meeting Tuesday.

The truck has advanced technology and is designed to increase efficiency and reduce emissions.

The purchase of the truck will be covered by previously budgeted funds.

“This truck is being replaced as part of our normal replacement process,” said George Seiz, the town’s public works director.

He said he does not foresee the purchase of a second advanced technology truck in the near future.

Notable

The Aldermen voted unanimously to assist with flood mitigation efforts for three flooded properties in the Plantation Acres neighborhood.

The properties are located in floodplains and meet the criteria for Floodplain Management Association assistance.

The town will have the option of purchasing two of the properties with federal funds.

These properties would have the homes removed from them and would be turned into open space. The association will pay for the above-ground elevation of the other property.

Quotable

The Aldermen also agreed to hold a public hearing about possible amendments to the Carrboro Land Use Ordinance. Those amendments would allow for additional uses in the M-1 zoning district, which includes parts of downtown.

Originally, the Aldermen were going to consider adopting an ordinance to add banks with drive-thru windows and freestanding automatic teller machines.

“This would give us the chance to hear from our advisory board, hear from our citizens and get more opinions on how the community thinks that this should go,” said Alderwoman Jacquelyn Gist.

The board moved to remove banks with drive-thru windows from the ordinance. The Aldermen approved the hearing, which will be held Nov. 19.

“This board made a decision several years ago that we don’t want anymore drive-thrus in the town,” said Alderman Sammy Slade.
