Humans of Chapel Hill for March 2

Daily Tar Heel staff writer Haley Ray sat down with retired Carrboro resident Janet Meredith for Town Talk's weekly Humans of Chapel Hill feature.

What has been the happiest moment in your life so far?

It was in the Vietnam War years in Chapel Hill, and I got my first apartment on Columbia Street. I was listening to The Moody Blues and Led Zeppelin—it was a great time.

What has been the saddest moment in your life so far?

When I went to mental hospitals in Carthage and had electric shock treatments.

What is something you like about yourself?

The fact that I’ve been on my own since 1987 and I’ve gotten work. I’ve finished school and I’m pretty well read. Now I’m retired and I kinda feel good. Because I don’t have to worry about earning a living, or have to worry about, you know, a whole lot of other things like where you’re going to college, what you’re going to study, who you’re going to marry.

What is your favorite thing to do?

Well I like to visit my brothers in San Francisco. But in Chapel Hill I like being independent and I like to play scrabble. And having friends over.

What is something you would like to accomplish in the next 5 years?

I’d like to stay healthy.

When was the last time you tried something new?

I guess dying my hair red about two weeks ago. My man friend doesn’t like it.
