UNC-Duke rivalry goes national with 'Alpha House'

The recent government shutdown showed the divide between establishment Republicans and the Tea Party. But the new show Alpha House will merge it with an even uglier feud: the UNC-Duke rivalry.

The show, available on Amazon, is about four Republican lawmakers who live in Washington, D.C. as roommates. Warning, the video does contain strong language.

One of the lawmakers, Gil John Biggs, is a senator from North Carolina and the former UNC basketball coach. But his career is put in peril when he faces a primary challenge from Digger Mancusi, the Duke basketball coach.

Though the story does seem far-fetched, in truth, participants in the rivalry have entered the political arena in the past. Former coach Dean Smith, a Democrat, once flirted with the idea of running for Senate. Meanwhile, according to Duke’s student newspaper, coach Mike Krzyzewski hosted a fundraiser for former Republican Senator Elizabeth Dole in 2002.

While some political and basketball junkies might get a kick out of seeing a Tar Heel and Blue Devil campaign against each other, “Alpha House” is the next best thing.
