Chapel Hill firefighters watch as Professor Sal Mercogliano talks through the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire of 1911 with his American history class outside Davis Library on Monday. Before going "live with the fire," students found exit routes from the eighth floor of the library and simulated the smoky atmosphere of a fire by attempting to escape the library blindfolded. The Chapel Hill Fire Department talked to the class about how they would respond to a fire, and the class compared that to how the New York Fire Department responded in 1911. Monday's activities were part of a three-day class series on the 1911 fire, which included students reading parts of the book, "The Triangle." DTH/Colleen Cook
