Here Gertrude stands in front of the gates that enclose the first landfill that was created. The landfill rises above her head in the background. Gertrude Nunn, 90, and her daughter, Judy, (last name is not Nunn) fought for years against the creation of the first landfill, and in years following, the sceond landfill, off of Rodgers Road in Chapel Hill. Nunn's family has owned the land for centuries. "If you can imagine it, when [my brothers and sisters and I] were younger, all of this was just forest," Judy said. "The size of the landfills is incredible...they wrap around our land."
