A federal judge placed a preliminary injunction Saturday on two parts of North Carolina's four-month-old abortion law, S.B. 20, which was passed over the veto of Gov. Roy Cooper by Republicans in the N.C. General Assembly.

The N.C. House and Senate will be voting on a nearly $30 billion state budget for the next two fiscal years on Thursday and Friday, N.C. House Speaker Tim Moore (R-Cleveland, Rutherford) and N.C. Senate President Pro Tem Phil Berger (R-Guilford, Rockingham) announced Tuesday evening.

Tailei Qi, the suspect charged with the first-degree murder of UNC professor Zijie Yan on Aug. 28, made his second court appearance and his first in superior court at the Orange County Courthouse on Tuesday morning. The clerk of the superior court has not yet received an indictment.

A proposed political action committee to support Adam Searing's mayoral campaign will not form, Julia Grumbles – who initially proposed the PAC – confirmed in an email to The Daily Tar Heel on Tuesday. The PAC would have also supported the four town council candidates endorsed by Searing ahead of this year's municipal elections.

The UNC Board of Trustees discussed the June 29 decision by the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn affirmative action, as well as updates to the School of Civic Life and Leadership and the School of Data Science and Society, at its July 27 full board meeting at the Carolina Inn. The BOT also passed a non-discrimination resolution.

My first story at The Daily Tar Heel was about the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools Board of Education working out a way to evaluate its superintendent. I left class in Carolina Hall at 6:15 p.m. on a Thursday and sat down in the Student Union soon after for the virtual meeting at 6:30 — stressed out of my mind.
