Bea, Perez, Maria and Moore marched together to the Register of Deeds office. Perez said, “Marching like that felt like I was back serving in the army.” Perez served in the military for four years in the 1980s.
After they got denied, Perez, Moore and their supporters gathered outside to process together from the Register of Deeds office. Perez said, “I felt like there was a lot of love and support behind us, with us and on the other side of the counter.”

Meghann Burke, the legal representative for couples in the We Do campaign and partner to Jasmine Beach-Ferrara, executive director of Campaign for Southern Equality, walk with Lee Crayton, who is organizing media for the organization. Beach-Ferrara said, “What we’re trying to do is take this out of the political realm, where it can be debated for infinity, and take it to the human realm.”
After leaving First Congregational Church, the family makes a quick stop at the store. Moore said, “I’m Southern, and after 48 years of being Southern, it just doesn’t feel right when I go to the Northern states. So the only thing I can do is change the laws here.”
The family sits at the First Congregational Church after Moore and Perez are denied a marriage license. Perez said, “One of the kids came home and said, ‘why don’t you just tell people you’re roommates?’ We’re not just roommates. That’s one of the reasons we did this.”
