Chris Thile is a mandolinist who can’t be pinned down by any convenient musical description. He’s collaborated with fellow label-defying masters like bassist Edgar Myer and cellist Yo-Yo Ma, in addition to leading the band Punch Brothers. His most recent project is a collection of Bach partitas and sonatas that were originally written for violin.

The Clearing is a record that almost didn’t happen for local duo Bowerbirds. Faced with illness and a temporary break-up, Beth Tacular and Phil Moore spent a year apart. The two got back together and wrote new songs. After recording most of them in Wisconsin, the band ended up having to spend months reworking them back home in Pittsboro.

When people ask me what my favorite band is, I don’t have to think about my response. It’s Punch Brothers. The immediate followup question is usually some variant of, “I haven’t heard of them. What kind of music do they make?” It’s at this point that I always falter. I can rattle off the band’s entire history with ease, but I struggle to describe just what the group does.

Tomorrow, WKNC, N.C. State University’s radio station, kicks off its two-night Double Barrel Benefit. Now in its ninth year, the event serves as the largest fundraiser for WKNC, David Mueller, bassist for Birds of Avalon, plays night two of the event with his side project Heads on Sticks. Dive may have only had five favorite local records, but the truth is, 2011 was a great year for music in the Triangle. It brought the heartbreaking harmonies of Mandolin Orange and Mount Moriah; Systems’ dark, twisting metal; the beats and rhymes of Kooley High; Megafaun’s rich freak-folk. The year ended on a high note, but what will 2012 bring? This week, five local bands gave us the low-down on their respective new projects — and from the looks of it, this year is quickly getting off to a pretty sweet start.
