Within the past two weeks, UNC’s Hussman School of Journalism and Media and Kenan-Flagler Business School released admissions decisions for the 2020-2021 cycle. There’s a lot of time, hard work and passion that goes into these applications, and unfortunately, the ending isn’t always as favorable as we’d like. The Editorial Board wants to congratulate those who were admitted, and to remind those who weren’t that rejection isn’t the end of the world, though it often feels that way in the immediate aftermath.

Election season has officially begun, with over one million people having already voted in North Carolina. As we cast our ballots, we might not always consider how voter suppression prevents many Americans from successfully voting. Voter suppression is not the rarity we think it is, and it may look different than what typically comes to mind when we think of historical efforts to make voting less accessible.

As the first public university in the United States, UNC claims to have been a beacon of educational freedom and critical thought for centuries. Thousands of North Carolinians and people around the world have left this University with a greater understanding of themselves and the world around them. But the critical thinking encouraged by faculty at UNC and other public universities is now under attack by the federal government.

Last week, both presidential candidates demonstrated their lack of professionalism during their first debate. The “conversation” between former Vice President Joe Biden and President Donald Trump seemed to reflect the discourse we see in politics on a daily basis: shouting, ignoring and disregarding other points of view. But they aren’t the only candidates on the ballot this November.
