First-year Mabrey Shaffmaster powering UNC volleyball to best season since 2016

Volleyball revolves around each team completing the three-step process and burying the ball into the opponent’s floor.  The first-year from New Castle, Indiana, has earned two ACC Freshman of the Week honors this season and plays with a noticeable drive to win every single point. Whether digging, passing or spiking, Shaffmaster relies on the playing experience she’s gained since her infancy. She narrowed her choices down to North Carolina and Duke, and from the moment Sagula first watched Shaffmaster play, he knew she would bring a special skill set to the Tar Heels.

'You're Deja Kelly': Sophomore guard uses her voice to lead Tar Heels' backcourt

Deja Kelly walked into the visitor’s locker rooms at Virginia Tech in February with her team trailing by 14 at halftime. The then-first-year guard sat down and talked quietly to herself. She took a breathe and whispered to herself three words: "You’re Deja Kelly."  Kelly scored 22 points in that game, in a comeback victory. That performance was part of a five-game streak of double-digit scoring. Kelly's love for basketball originated on the courts of San Antonio, Texas at the age of five. With the support of her mother over the years, today, Kelly is a leader in the backcourt for UNC.
