UNC performance groups navigate a return to the stage

UNC's Ebony Readers/Onyx Theatre, Company Carolina and Kenan Theatre Company all found ways to perform amid COVID-19 restrictions, and their programming has evolved throughout the year.  "I think it was frustrating being home or having a lot of restrictions doing in-person theater," Company Carolina producer and treasurer Ethan Sichel said. "I think it's also allowed us the opportunity to really be creative and explore the possibilities of theater and the capabilities of theater here at UNC.”

Some of the biggest UNC headlines in 2021 include the tenure vote of Nikole Hannah-Jones, community demands for a vaccine mandate, mental health on campus, the retirement of Roy Williams, the emergence of food trucks on campus and the opening of the Asian American Center. 

2021: The year in review

So 2021 wasn't "normal." It wasn't a classic college experience, or a callback to life before the pandemic. Instead, it was a year of setbacks and progress, grief and joy.
